About Arthur H. Vandenberg
The much-respected politician, Arthur Hendrick Vandenberg Sr., was known widely amongst his colleagues for his outspokenness and tenacity. He rose to global recognition after becoming President pro tempore of the United States Senate in 1947.
Early Life
The politician was raised by Alpha and Aaron Vandenberg and lived out his early years in Michigan. He graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School and later enrolled in the University of Michigan in 1901. Vandenberg spent his early life working at Collier’s Weekly magazine in 1900.
Political Career
Vandenberg's political career began after he worked at Grand Rapids Herald, a newspaper publishing site from 1906 to 1928. His involvement in the political journey of various Republican candidates earned him a position as the United States Senator from Michigan, which spanned from 1928 to 1951. He later took the position of Republican Senate Conference Chairman from 1945 to 1947. He was also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations from 1947 to 1949. The politician also rose to the position of President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1947 to 1949.
Personal Life
Vandenberg married Elizabeth Watson in 1906. After the death of Elizabeth in 1917, he married Hazel Harper Whitaker in 1918.
The politician died in 1951, aged 67, and he was survived by 3 children.
