About Arthur Fiedler
The American conductor was known for leading the Boston Pops Orchestra for more than five decades. He also conducted the Boston-based orchestra Boston Symphony.
Family
He was the son of Johanna and Emanuel Fiedler, both musicians.
Education
He studied at the Boston Latin School and the Royal Academy of Music (Hochschule für Musik Berlin) under German violinist Willy Hess.
Conducting Career
Fiedler became a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1915, as a violinist under conductor Karl Muck and recorded “New World Symphony” by Czech composer Dvorak. He also played the piano, the organ and percussion.
The conductor was the brain behind the Boston Sinfonietta, a classical music orchestra that had the majority of its members from the Boston Symphony.
In 1930, the skilled musician received an appointment to become the eighteenth conductor of the Boston Pops and served in this position for half a century. Fiedler released an album titled “Saturday Night Fielder”.
Between 1950 and 1951, he performed on NBC’s “The Standard Hour” shows, as the conductor of the San Francisco Symphony in the War Memorial Opera House.
Achievements
The Boston Pops became one of the most widely used orchestras in the United States under his tutelage.
