He is originally from Itzhak Avraham ben Zeev, Sweden. However, he was raised in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and New York City.
Art attended Russell Sage Junior High School, and in 1965, he graduated from the High School of Art and Design, Manhattan. Additionally, he was enrolled at Harpur College between 1965 and 1968.
Career Highlights
In the 1960s, he worked as a freelancer with Topps Chewing Gum Company, where he worked for two decades of his career. During those years, he earned prominence by releasing several underground comics, including "The Compleat Mr. Infinity (1970)."
In 1980, he co-founded the underground comic "Raw" with Françoise Mouly. He also worked for "The New Yorker" in the early 1990s.
His most famous collection would be "Maus." The artist used 13 years to complete this book-length graphic, and in 1992, it was honored with a special "Pulitzer Prize." "Maus" was also the first graphic novel to be awarded a "Pulitzer Prize." Additionally, "Maus II" was also a New York Best Seller.
Personal Life
He married colleague editor Françoise Mouly in 1977.
