About Arnold Sommerfeld
Arnold Sommerfeld was a brilliant German physicist who trained and supervised many of the world's Nobel Prize winners in physics and chemistry. He is also known for introducing both the 2nd and 4th quantum numbers and pioneered the X-ray wave theory.
Childhood and Education
Sommerfeld grew up in Konigsberg, East Prussia with his parents Franz and Cäcile. He attended high school at Altstädtisches Gymnasium, where he excelled brilliantly in all his subjects. He decided to study mathematics at Konigsberg's Albertina University and stayed on to complete his doctorate degree. He was 23 when he received his PhD.
Career
In 1893, he became a teaching assistant at the Mineralogical Institute. The following year, he worked under famous German mathematician Felix Klein.
Throughout his career, he won five awards, wrote three articles and published 20 books. He taught several specialized and general courses, as well as held seminars and colloquia.
Arnold Sommerfeld also received honorary degrees from various universities.
Death
He passed away in 1951 in Munich, Germany, after suffering from injuries in a traffic accident.

Family
He married Johanna Höpfner, and they welcomed four children; three sons and a daughter.
