About Apolinario Mabini
Apolinario Mabini played a massive role in the Philippines' struggle for independence. Regarded as the "brain of the revolution", Mabini led the Katipunans during the Revolution in 1896. As a trained lawyer, he was appointed as the lead counsel to the country’s Revolutionary Government in 1898 under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo.
The following year, he was selected to the position of the Prime Minister which made him the first person in the history of the country to serve in that position. During his four months stay in office, he also served as the Philippines’ Secretary of Foreign Relations. He was arrested by the Americans during the infamous Philippine–American War.
Family
He was one of the children of Inocencio Leon Mabini y Lira and Dionisia Maranan y Magpantay. He had seven siblings.
Education
Mabini studied at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran and later moved to the University of Santo Tomas where he had his law training.
Trivia
A number of places and institutions in the Philippines have been named after him including The Mabini Academy and the Mabini municipality in the Davao de Oro province.
In 1974, the Filipino government introduced the Gawad Mabini to honor citizens who have promoted the country to the outside world.
