Personal Life
His parents were Mateja Kopitar and Matjaž who was also into sports. His father was a hockey player who was on the national team and also a coach for Acroni Jesenice and he taught him to skate when he was just four years old. In 2005, he started a relationship with Ines Dominc and had children with her.
Career
He started his career in 2002 when he played for HK Acroni Jesenice and also played for HK Kranjska Gora. His decision to step up the game made him travel to Sweden and joined the team for Södertälje SK. He was voted by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau as the top European skater. He was later chosen to play for Los Angeles Kings in 2006 and while there, he was chosen as rookie of the year and received the Calder Memorial Trophy. He has also taken part in IHF World U18 Championship in 2003 and World Junior Championships in 2004.
