About Annie Besant
Annie Besant definitely had her hands full with the various causes she dedicated her adult life to but she definitely excelled at them all. She was a women’s rights activist, theosophist, socialist, writer, educationist, philanthropist and orator. Besides women’s rights, her activism included Indian and Irish independence, union action and theosophy. Her contributions to education include helping in the establishments of the Banaras Hindu University, the Hyderabad National Collegiate Board and the Central Hindu School. She wrote more than 300 pamphlets and books.
Family Life
Her birth name was Annie Wood, as given by her parents Emily Roche Morris, an Irish Catholic and William Burton Persse Wood, an Englishman. She was married to Frank Besant, a clergyman who became the father of her two children. Due to differences in ideologies with respect to her independence, money and religious beliefs they separated legally in 1873.
Death
She died in Aydar, Madras Presidency, British India on September 20, 1933.
