About Anne Tyler
Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist Ann Tyler is author of some widely-read stories, including; “Accidental Tourist”, “Breathing Lessons” and “Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant”. The latter novel, which was released in 1982, won Tyler the PEN/Faulkner Award and the National Book Award. The novel was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1983.
Background
Anne grew up in North Carolina. The gifted novelist is an alumnus of Duke University, where he graduated with a degree in Russian Literature.
The prolific writer studied creative writing under famous novelists, Reynolds Price and William Blackburn, while at Duke.
She got married to Iranian novelist and psychiatrist Taghi Mohammad Modarressi in 1963. By her, he fathered two daughters.
Career as an Author
The eloquent story-writer authored over 4 dozen stories in her first three scores as an author. Approximately half of that number are novels, and the other half, short-stories. For several decades, Anne was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
She worked as a bibliographer at Duke and a Librarian at Canada’s McGill University later in her life.
Awards
The accomplished author was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for her novel – “Breathing Lessons”, which was also acclaimed Time’s “Book of the Year” that same year. Several of her books and short-stories have been nominated for various prestigious awards over the course of her career, including Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize for Fiction for her work “Morgan’s Passing”.
In 2012, The Sunday Times honored her with the Literary Excellence Award.
