About Anne Sexton
Originally called Anne Gray Harvey, but professionally known as Anne Sexton, She was a famous American author and poet. Sexton’s writings mainly were about depression, suicide, mental health, and how she dealt with them.
Early Life & Education
She was born in Newton, Massachusetts, but grew up in Boston. In 1945, her parents enrolled her at Rodgers boarding school, Massachusetts. She then attended Garland School a year later.
Sexton is an alumnus of Boston University.
Poetry & Writing Career
Sexton battled with bipolar disorder for the majority of her lifetime. However, after a severe episode, her therapist, Dr. Martin Orne, encouraged her to try poetry to better her condition. Sexton then attended John Holmes’ poetry workshops.
She caught the minds of many when she started writing. The New Yorker Magazine accepted Sexton’s early writings. She published her first poetry volume, “To Bedlam and Part Way Back,” in 1960.
She was a member of the Royal Society of Literature and the first woman to join the “Phi Beta Kappa,” Harvard chapter. In addition, she won multiple Pulitzer Prizes awards.
Death
On October 4, 1974, Sexton committed suicide. She got drunk, went into her career, and sparked her car’s engine. She then covered herself with a fur coat and inhaled the carbon monoxide, which killed her.
