Anna Lee Fisher is a retired astronaut of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Family and Education
She is the daughter of Elfriede Sims. She was brought up by her grandmother in Germany. The astronaut, after she had completed her senior high education at San Pedro High School, got admitted to the University of California and obtained a science degree in chemistry.
In 1977, she met her husband, Bill Fisher who also served as a NASA Astronaut. They later got married and they both were the parents of three children. As of 2022, the couple are divorced.
Career Highlights
Lee Fisher aspired to become an astronaut at an early age after she had listened to Alan Shepard on radio.
After a successful year training, she was tasked to help produce new spacesuits specifically for women. Her other earliest positions as an astronaut include an astronaut officer and she also helped to create new ways of repairing space shuttle titles.
Shortly after her marriage with Bill, she got pregnant and during the days of her pregnancy, she was assigned to her first major flight which was successful.
After the birth of her second child in 1989, she went on leave for about 5 years, returning in 1995. From 1995 until the time of her retirement in 2017, she held a number of positions, including serving as the deputy chief for operations training, a CAPCOM and a lead CAPCOM.
As an astronaut, she was engaged in programs such as the Space Shuttle and International Space Station.
Achievements
She was the recipient of the NASA Space Flight Medal in 1984, and the following year, she walked home with the Mother of the Year Award.
Trivia
She received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal for two times.
