Angelos Charisteas is a Greek retired soccer star who became a national hero in 2004 after netting the only goal to earn his country the UEFA Euro title. He featured 88 times for his country’s senior team in which he participated in some top competitions like the FIFA World Cup.
Career highlights
Charisteas began his professional career in 1997 as a member of Aris Thessaloniki in his native country. In 2002, this soccer star, who mostly operated as a center forward, moved to Germany and signed for Werder Bremen. With the club, he won the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal.
After three successful years, he joined Ajax in the Netherlands. During his playing career, he featured for some well-known clubs like Al-Nassr, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04.
Achievements
He was named in the “Team of the Tournament” after the UEFA Euros in 2004. Later that year, he was nominated for the Ballon d'Or prize.
Trivia
The soccer star is also good at playing the Bouzouki.
He was named as Aris Thessaloniki’s sporting director in 2019.
