Andrew Velasquez is an American politician who formerly served as the head of one of the Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) 10 regions. And overall he is considered as one of America’s leading experts on disaster management.
Achievements
Velasquez is a distinguished member of the Illinois State University Alumni Hall of Fame.
He served as a member of Chicago Police Department for a decade.
Afterwards he was made Executive Director of the Office of Emergency Management and Communications based in Chicago.
Then he was promoted again, to become the Director of the entire Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
After a three-year tenure at that role, US President Barack Obama himself put him in charge of FEMA’s Region V, which oversees disaster management in America’s Midwestern States (including Illinois).
He also briefly acted as the Administrator over FEMA’s Region IV, which oversees the Southeast United States.

He was a member of the US Army Reserve for six years.
Velasquez has a bachelor’s degree and MSc in Criminal Justice from Illinois State University.
He is of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent.
