The last of the Civil War veteran governors, Andrew L. Harris was one of the commanders of the Battle of Gettysburg in the civil war and the 44th governor of Ohio State.
Early Life
This Ohio- native attended Miami University and enlisted into the Union Army in 1861 as a private.
Career
Harris grew in ranks and became a colonel. He was made Regimental Commander of the 75th Ohio Infantry. He helped defeat the attacks of the Confederate forces around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863. He was promoted to Brigadier General for his bravery in the war.
After the war, Harris opened a law practice in Ohio and was elected into the Ohio state senate in 1866. He was elected Lieutenant-Governor of Ohio and became Governor of Ohio in1906 following the previous governor’s death.
Personal Life
Harris tied the knot with Caroline Conger in 1865; the couple had a son.
