About Andreas Vesalius
Considered to be the founder of modern human anatomy, Andreas Vesalius dedicated more than half of his life to medicine in the capacities of anatomist, anatomy professor and physician. He was appointed by the University of Padua as the chair of surgery and anatomy in 1537 and he taught there until 1542. A year after leaving his position, he published the first edition of his book series, “De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem”, which have been described as significant influence on human anatomy. From 1543 until his death, he was the imperial physician of the Holy Roman Empire.
Family Life
His name as given at birth by his father, Anders van Wesel was Andries van Wesel. His mother’s name was Isabel Crabbe. The elder van Wesel served in the courts of Holy Roman Emperors Maximilian and Charles V as an apothecary and valet de chamber respectively.
Death
He died on October 15, 1564 after being shipwrecked on the Ionian Sea’s Zakynthos Island while on his way to perform a pilgrimage on the Holy Land.
