About André Breton
French art and literature is not complete when the name André Breton is excluded. He was a legendary French writer and poet. He’s also considered as one of the best teachers of art and literature this world has witnessed.
Breton is popularly known as the leader and theorist of “Surrealism” – a widespread cultural movement in Europe between 1920 and 1950. He was the writer of Surrealism’s first Manifesto in 1924, and described the movement as the pure and highest psychic automatism.
His celebrated books and writings include “L’Amour fou” and “Nadja”; he also designed many plastic arts.
Personal Life
He married thrice in his lifetime and had only a daughter, Aube Elléouët Breton.
Legacy
Many anthropologists describe Breton as the world’s greatest collector of ethnographic materials, trinkets, and other art collections. In 1931, he escaped a financial crisis by selling many of his art collections.
However, he managed to grow his collection back to over 5000 items, including sculptures, manuscripts, etc. He also ran many antiquarians and museums during his lifetime.
After he died in 1966, his family allowed researchers and students access to his art collection and archive. Calmels Cohen auctioned the collection as attempts to establish a Surrealism foundation to protect the collection. Centre Georges Pompidou has preserved the wall of the collection’s apartment.
