About Anders Celsius
Anders Celsius was a renowned Swedish astronomer who contributed immensely to the measurement of temperature. In 1742, he proposed the inverted edition of the then Centigrade scale known as the Celsius scale.
He also goes into the history books as the first person to identify the link between the variations in the Earth’s magnetic field and the aurora borealis. In 1741, Celsius co-founded Sweden’s first astronomical observatory known as the Uppsala Astronomical Observatory. He also taught at Uppsala University between 1730 and 1744.
Other works
Celsius was also an author who published many literatures. In 1730, he published a text titled “New Method for Determining the Distance from the Earth to the Sun (Nova Methodus distantiam solis a terra determinandi)”.
He was also a mathematician and physicist who completed lots of research about the movement of the Earth.
Family
His grandfather was the famous mathematician and astronomer Magnus Celsius. He followed in the footsteps of his father Nils Celsius, who was also a professor of astronomy.
Education
He was a graduate of Uppsala University.
Death
Celsius died in 1744 from tuberculosis.
Trivia
During his numerous researches, he worked with some popular scholars like Pierre Louis Maupertuis.
In 1739, he helped to create the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
