Family
Heckerling was first married to David Brandt in 1981 but their marriage ended after only a few years. In 1984 she wed director Nael Israel but they divorced in 1990. She has one daughter Mollie Israel.
Education
She studied film at New York University and is also an alumnus of the AFI Conservatory.
Career
Heckerling produced her first short film “Getting it Over With” during her sophomore year at the American Film Institute. The president of Universal Pictures Thom Mount was interested in her but she did not have an agent at the time. After several months of trying to locate an agent, Mount asked her to produce a film.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
In 1982, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” was produced; it was Heckerling’s first feature film, which came from a script by Cameron Crowe based on his 1981 book “Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story”. The film starred actors such as Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicholas Cage, and Anthony Edwards. Sean Paul, an American actor who was featured in the film as Jeff Spicoli, rose to stardom after his performance in the film. The film was a huge success when it was launched and it was quickly available in theatres across the country. It also produced a short film series aired on CBS known as “Fast Times”, which ran for seven episodes from March 3 – April 23, 1986, with Heckerling as the writer, director, and producer.
Other Career Highlights
She directed her next film “Johnny Dangerously”, a crime comedy, two years after her first film in 1984. It starred Joe Piscopo, Peter Boyle, Danny DeVito, Dom DeLuise, and Michael Keaton. The film however failed to perform at the box office at its opening release.
Heckerling directed the comedy film “National Lampoon's European Vacation”. Written by Robert Klane, the film starred Beverly D’Angelo and Chevy Chase. It was a continuation of the famous “National Lampoon’s Vacation”, a 1983 American comedy film directed by Harold Ramis, starring D’Angelo, Chase, and other actors. It was a massive success and performed incredibly well at the box office.
The director’s greatest success was recorded in 1989 with the romantic comedy film “Look Who’s Talking” in which she worked with famous actors John Travolta, Bruce Wills, and Kirstie Alley. The film has been Heckerling’s highest earning film throughout her career, grossing almost $ 300 million.
In the 1990’s she followed up with two sequels to “Look Who’s Talking”. She directed and wrote together with her then-husband Nael Israel “Look Who’s Talking Too”.
Later in 1995, “Clueless”, another comedy film, was written and directed by Heckerling, and in 2000, she was the director and producer of “Loser”. After a hiatus, she starred Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd in the 2007 romantic comedy film “I Could Never Be Your Woman”.
Awards and Nominations
Heckerling was awarded the National Society of Film Critics “Best Screenplay” award in 1995. She also received a nomination for the Writers Guild of America award for “Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen” for her screenplay “Clueless”.
In 1999, she was given the “Women in Film Crystal Award” for her contribution toward enhancing the role of women in the entertainment industry.
