About Alvar Aalto
In spite of delving into painting and sculpture together with architecture, Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto never self-identified as an artist. He was of the belief that the other two (sculpture and painting) fit under architecture.
Active from the 1920s to the 1970s, he had many clients who were industrialists. Unlike other architects, he did not only design buildings; he went further to work on the interior and designed furniture, surfaces, glassware and lamps. Notable amongst his building designs are the Saynatsalo Town Hall, Paimio Sanatorium, Finlandia Hall and Villa Mairea.
Family Life
He was born to a postmistress mother, Selma Hackstedt and a land surveyor father, Johan Henrik Aalto. He collaborated with his first wife, architect Aino Marsio on some of his work. She died in 1949. Three years later, he married his second wife, Elissa Makiniemi. She was also an architect. He had two children.
Achievements
He won a Prince Eugen Medal, an AIA Gold Medal and a RIBA Gold Medal.
Death
He died in Helsinki, Finland on May 11, 1976.
