About Alfred Russel Wallace
Alfred Russel Wallace was a geographer, naturalist, anthropologist, explorer and biologist. A pioneer of biogeography, he extensively studied the distribution of species in the Malay Archipelago and Amazon River basin.
He is recognized best for developing the theory of evolution through natural selection, which was later made popular by Charles Darwin. He was also involved in social activism, having been a critic of capitalism in Britain in the 19th century.
Family Life
He was one of nine children born to Mary Anne Greenell and Thomas Vere Wallace. He was married to Annie Mitten, daughter of English pharmaceutical chemist William Mitten from 1866 until his death. They had three children.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Royal Medal, Darwin Medal, Order of Merit, Founder’s Medal, Copley Medal, amongst others.
Death
He died on 7 November 1913.
