About Alfred P. Sloan
Alfred Pritchard Sloan Jr. was a famous American business executive known for his outstanding expertise in the automobile and automotive industry. He was the president of “General Motors Corporation” from the 1920s through to the 1950s, making the corporation one of the leading automotive firms in the world.
Background & Education

Career & General Motors Corporation
In 1899, he became president of the “Hyatt Roller Bearing” company after his father had purchased the company. However, in the 1910s, the company merged with several other companies and eventually became a “General Motors (GM) Corporation” subsidiary. At GM, Sloan rose through the ranks from vice president to president in 1923 and finally to board chairman in 1937.
Due to Sloan’s administrative prowess, GM became one of America’s most prominent business corporations, dominating the auto market by accounting for over 50% of all vehicle sales in the country. However, in the 1950s, when the “United Automobile Workers” organized strikes in GM factories, he refused to negotiate with them. As a result, he resigned as chairman in 1956.
In the 1950s, Sloan penned his autobiography, “My Years at General Motors.”
