About Alexander Parkes
In 1862, English inventor Alexander Parkers discovered the first man-made plastic called Parkesine.
Invention
Parkes worked as an apprentice to a brass founder before leaving to work at Elkington's, where he was in charge of the casting department. It was during that time that he developed an interest in electroplating and put out his first patent. After developing Parkesine, he opened his company for bulk production.Tthe business was however not successful.
Legacy
In 2002, the Plastics Historical Society put up a blue plaque on his home in Dulwich. In 2005, he was posthumously inducted into the Plastics Academy Hall of Fame.
