About Alberto Tomba
Olympian Alberto Tomba is a former professional Italian skier. He is best known for winning five Olympic medals during his career and for becoming the first slalom specialist in 1995 to win the overall World Cup since 1978. But Tomba was also known for his flamboyant and charismatic personality.
Childhood
Tomba learned how to ski when he was 3 and by age 7, he had started racing. He was an active kid, participating in sports like football and tennis. However, it was skiing that he found to be his biggest passion. In 1984, he finished 4th in the Junior World Championships and began his competitive skiing career.
Career
He made his Olympic debut in 1988 at the Calgary Winter Games where he won both giant slalom and slalom competitions. He defended his giant slalom title and became the first Alpine skier to win the same title twice. At the height of his career, Tomba was the one to beat. He was nicknamed “Tomba la Bomba.” He retired in 1998.
Later Career
Tomba ventured into action in 2000 when he starred in Damiano Damiani’s crime film “Alex l’ariete.”
He was still an important figure in sports, and at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, he brought the Olympic Flame to the stadium.
