About Alberto Salazar
An impressive competitor in his prime, Alberto Salazar is a former Cuban-America long-distance runner and a former track coach who worked under the Nick Oregon Project to train athletes.
Early life
His father, Jose Salazar was a Cuban revolutionary who later became a prominent opposition against the Fidel Castro-led government. Salazar was born in Cuba during the revolutionary era of Fidel Castro.
At a young age, his family moved to the United States where he began to hone his skills as a track runner.
His Competitive Running Career
While at the University of Oregon, he became a member of the 1977 NCAA cross country championship team and even won the individual race the following year.
Salazar built impressive feet in track when he won the New York City Marathons consecutively from 1980 to 1982. His first major marathon win was in the year 1980; winning at 2:09:41 and making him one of the fastest U.S. runners of all time.
Coaching Career
After retiring from a career as a runner, he got the opportunity to work under the Nike Oregon Project which was purposefully targeting the training of athletes to become worthy Olympic competitors.
Under his tutelage, in 2012, two of his athletes, Mo Farah and Galen Rupp who were under the Nike Oregon Project, placed 1st and 2nd respectively during the 10,000m race at the Summer Olympics held in London.
