The American avant-garde saxophonist was a pioneering artist of free jazz in the late 1960s. He dabbled in jazz-rock fusion music, as heard on such pieces as “Music is the Healing Force of the Universe.”
Early Life
Born in Ohio, Texas, he received his first saxophone lessons from his father. He enrolled at the Academy of Music and later moved to Sweden.
Career Highlights
In 1964, he got signed to ESP-DISK Records, which helped him release some ground-breaking albums including, “Spiritual Unity.” The album featured “Ghosts,” one of his well-known hits of the period. 1966 witnessed his musical relationship with Impulse Records which resulted in the release of “Albert Ayler in Greenwich Village.” Between 1967 and 1968, he recorded three LPs which featured his girlfriend’s vocals.
Personal Life
He tied the knot with manager-turned-wife Mary Parks.
