About Al Unser
The American automobile racer, Al Unser made his official debut in racing when he participated in the Winston Western 500 competition in 1968. As a result of his impressive racing skills, he was inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.
Personal life
Unser was the son of Jerome Henry Unser and Mary Catherine Craven. He was born into a family who loved to race. He was the younger brother of the American automobile racer, Bobby Unser.
The racer was married twice and he had three children with his first wife Wanda Jesperson.
Career Highlights
At the age of 18, Al Unser started to compete in races using modified roadsters and sprint cars. His first win was in 1970, when he won the Indianapolis 500. Since then, he has won several championship titles and they include the 1978 Triple Crown of Ovals and the 1985 PPG Indy Car World Series.
The American racer for his 36 years career in racing, raced for teams such as Longhorn, Penske, Menard and King. Additionally, he made 39 wins, 97 podiums and 28 poles.
Honors
Al Unser was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1998.
Also, in 1991, he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
Death
He died of liver cancer.
