About Adlai Stevenson
Adlai Stevenson began his service to the federal government of the United States in the 1930s. He worked in offices such as the Federal Alcohol Administration, State Department and Agricultural Adjustment Administration.
He won the gubernatorial elections of the state of Illinois and served as Governor from 1949 to 1953. He lost two bids (1952 and 1956) to become the President of the United States on the ticket of the Democratic Party. Originally a member of the committee which formed the United Nations, he was appointed as the US Ambassador to the UN in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy.
Family Life
He was the grandson of former US Vice President Adlai Stevenson I and the son of Illinois Secretary of State Lewis Stevenson. His mother’s name was Helen.
He had three sons with Ellen Borden, to whom he was married from 1928 to 1949. Following their divorce, he had relationships with journalist Alicia Patterson and reporter Marietta Tree.
Death
He died on July 14, 1965 from a heart attack during official duties in London, England.
