About Abdullah Gül
Abdullah Gül’s political journey started in 1991 when he was voted as a member of parliament for Kayseri. His tenure came to an end in 2007 after serving for five terms. Between 2003 and 2007, he served as Turkey’s Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Within that period, he also served as the country’s Deputy Prime Minister. He held other political positions before he was elected as Turkey’s President in 2007. He served in that position until 2014 when he was succeeded by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Family
He was born to Adviye Satoğlu and her husband Ahmet Hamdi Gül who served in the air force. He has been married to Hayrünnisa Özyurt since 1980 and together they have raised three kids.
Education
He attended Istanbul University where he read Economics. This politician was also a student of the University of Exeter.
Honors
Gül has received many medals including the European Council’s Pro Merito medal and the United Kingdom’s Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.
Trivia
He has also worked with the Islamic Development Bank.
In 1998, he moved from the Islamist Welfare Party to the Virtue Party.
