About Abdul Hamid II
Abdul Hamid II was a 19th century Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from Turkey. He reigned from 1876 to 1909 in an era called the Hamidian Era. During his reign, he battled with the Russian Empire from 1877 to 1878, which he lost. In 1897, Hamid II went to war with the Kingdom of Greece. This time around, he was victorious. In the course of his reign, the Empire was noted for the massacres of Armenians and Assyrians. He was the first Sultan to promulgate the Empire's first Constitution.
Family
He was born to Tirimüjgan Kadın and Sultan Abdulmejid I. He had several half siblings including Mehmed VI, Mehmed V and Murad V. He married 13 times. He also gave birth to several children including Ulviye Sultan, Şehzade Mehmed Selim, Şehzade Mehmed, Şehzade Abdülkerim, Naime Sultan and Şehzade Mehmed Burhaneddin.
Awards
He won several accolades including the Grand Master of the Order of the Crescent, Grand Master of the Order of the Medjidie, Grand Master of the Order of Osmanieh, Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Stephen (1881), Knight of the Order of the Elephant (1884) by the Kingdom of Denmark, the Knight of the Order of the Seraphim (1879) by the Kingdom of Sweden and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Tower and Sword by the Kingdom of Portugal.
