About Abby Wambach
When it comes to women soccer, Abby Wambach has established herself as one of the finest talents to ever participate in the sport. Mostly used as a forward, the American became her country’s record scorer before announcing her retirement in 2015. As of September 2021, she was the second top scorer in both women and men international soccer.
She started her professional soccer career in 2002 after she joined the Washington Freedom. She later played for the Ajax America Women before re-joining the Freedom in 2009. The Rochester-born soccer legend also played for some top teams like Western New York Flash, and MagicJack.
International career
In 2001, she was selected into the U.S. women soccer team for the first following her performance at the college level. She made her debut later that year. She was a member of the side that won the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015. Wambach also helped her country to win gold at the Olympic Games on two occasions.
Family
She was raised by her parents Judy and Pete Wambach, alongside six other siblings. Between 2013 and 2016, she was married to fellow soccer star Sarah Huffman. A year after their divorce, she tied the knot with Glennon Doyle, an author.
Education
She was a student of Our Lady of Mercy High School before joining the University of Florida.
Achievements
Prior to announcing her retirement, she received six U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year awards. In 2011, she was awarded with the ESPY Award, and the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year.

In 2016, she was arrested for DUI.
She has endorsed a number of brands including Panasonic, Nike, and Gatorade.
