About Abbas Kiarostami
Abbas Kiarostami was a poet, scriptwriter, film director, and filmmaker from Iran. He began his filmmaking journey in 1970. His debut film was titled “The Bread and Alley” and its duration was only 12 minutes.
He made several films including “First Case, Second Case” in 1979, “Like Someone in Love” in 2012, “The Wind Will Carry Us” in 1999, and “Taste of Cherry” in 1997.
Prior to his filmmaking career, he was a professional photographer. He designed posters, created advertisement content, and shot over 100 commercials for Iranian television. During the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Kiarostami was pronounced the president of the Cinéfondation and short film division.
As a poet, his works include “Abbas Kiarostami: Cahiers du Cinema Livres”, “Le vent nous emportera: Cahiers du Cinema Livres”, and “Walking with the Wind”.
Education
He was educated at the University of Tehran.
Family
In 1969, Kiarostami tied the knot with Parvin Amir-Gholi but divorced her in 1982. He birthed two children named Bahman and Ahmad.
Death
In 2016, he died of gastrointestinal cancer.
Awards
Kiarostami won numerous accolades including the François Truffaut Award in 1993, Pier Paolo Pasolini Award in 1995, and Akira Kurosawa Award in 2000.
In 2005, he received the Gold Leopard of Honor at the Locarno International Film Festival. Again, he won the Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2008.
