About Abba Eban
2001 winner of the award for the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement, Abba Solomon Meir Eban was an Israeli diplomat and politician who served in high office until he died in 2002.
Family and Education
Eban was born into a Jewish home and lived with his mother, Alida Sacks, and father, Avram Solomon. The politician lived most of his youth in South Africa and first graduated from St Olave's Grammar School. He later went on to read languages at the University of Cambridge before finally graduating from the Pembroke College and Queens College.
Career
Evan started his political career as a diplomat and was appointed an Ambassador to the United States from 1950 to 1959. He was also the Permanent Representative of the UN from 1949 to 1959.
Eban joined the Mapai political party and represented the Knesset faction from 1959 to 1988. He took on numerous ministerial roles, such as the Minister of Education and Culture from 1960 to 1963 and the Minister of Foreign affairs from 1966 to 1974.
Personal Life and Death
Eban died in 2002 and was survived by his wife Shoshana and their two children.
