He schooled at Benson Polytechnic High School. He later attended Oregon State University where he began building his professional basketball career at the college level.
Basketball Career
His professional career in the basketball league began when he was drafted and started playing for the Los Angeles Lakers on November 19, 1986. From there, he built on his streak level by playing for a number of basketball clubs including the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and Miami Heat.
He holds the record for the most consecutive regular-season games played in the National Basketball Association with 1,192. Most of his career success came when he was playing for the Lakers.
In 1990, he was honored as an NBA All-Star.
Awards
For his leadership on and off the court, he was awarded the Bobby Jones Award by the sports organization Athletes in Action.
He also engaged himself in humanitarian programs and for his efforts; he was inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame.
In 2003, he was also awarded and honored in the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
