  Justinian I is crowned the main king of the empire known as Byzantine. He is otherwise known as Petrus Sabbatius.

  August 1, 1498:

  Popular explorer, Christopher Columbus discovers modern-day Venezuela. He initially named the place "Isla Santa" and handed it over to Spain.

• 1800

  August 1, 1800:

  The Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland merge to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The union is formed after ‘The Acts of Union 1800’ were accepted.

• 1980

  August 1, 1980:

  English collective Def Leppard performs in the United States for the first time. They opened the show headlined by Australian band, AC/DC in the city of New York.

  MTV Europe begins transmission. The music video of Dire Straits' single titled "Money for Nothing" becomes the maiden video to be shown on the network.

  Pop star, Michael Jackson announces his marriage to singer, Lisa Marie Presley. They had their ceremony eleven weeks earlier in a city in Dominican Republic.
